Dunmore was originally made up of small isolated coves where fishermen earned an honest income from the rich fishing grounds off the coast. But all that changed when it was identified as a strategic location of the Royal Mail in 1814 and over the next four years the area was transformed. This walk examines the impact of this decision, the work that took place and the reason for “East” being added to the name.
Along the way we learn of the history of the location, meet the quarrymen as the hewed stone for the new mole, the Scottish engineer Alexander Nimmo as he wrestled with the challenge and Miss Stephens – “The Sweetest Siren” who performed a concert in the diving bell below the waters.
