Great news to share as Ballyhack Castle opens for Summer 2025. Another positive is that I will be employed there as a seasonal guide for the duration with my colleague, Tim.

Getting to Ballyhack Castle

The OPW runs the castle along with numerous others sites nationally. Ballyhack is free to enter. It will open from Saturday to Wednesday from 10 am to 5 pm (last tour 45 mins before closure), and we can provide guided tours (subject to availability) or browse the site at your own pace. Ballyhack Castle is just a minute’s walk from the Passage East Car Ferry. If you’re coming from Waterford, hop on as a foot passenger for just €2 return—an easy and scenic way to travel. Need a refreshment? Stop by Byrnes of Ballyhack. The village also offers beautiful walking routes with great views, a peaceful atmosphere and great people who make time for a chat.

Explore by Car

If you’re driving, you’re spoiled for choice. Visit nearby OPW heritage sites like Tintern de Voto, JFK Arboretum, and Dunbrody Abbey. Or venture further to Hook Lighthouse, Duncannon Fort (which hopes to open for tours in June), or the Dunbrody Famine Ship in New Ross. You can even join a walking tour with Myles Courtney through the streets of New Ross.

Wexford visitors can take the ferry over to Passage East. Enjoy historic walks like the Passage Strand, a fun playground, a local café, or call to Sean Furlong’s New Geneva bar.

Step Back in Time at Ballyhack Castle

Built around 1450, Ballyhack Castle is packed with character. Discover fascinating architectural features such as the Murder Hole or Bartizan and learn about local history. For me, the real gem, though, is the story of the castle in terms of the estuary and its rich maritime trade— so many Ballyhack tales that they are hard to choose between. Whether you’re on a day trip or just passing through, Ballyhack is well worth a stop. You’ll find plenty of parking in the village and friendly locals always up for a chat.
