Cian Manning is one of Waterford’s most prolific writers and he has certainly scored again with his latest offering. This terrific book blends the immortal line of one of our favourite sporting heroes John Mullane. “I Love Me County – Waterford Sporting Stories” highlights the depth of sporting talent in Cian‘s native city and county.
Now, being a sports fanatic like Cian, one might fear that it is a book for those of a similar disposition. However, as a non-sports fan, I can assure you that what is on offer in this book is a treat for those who have an interest in sport, history, heritage, social history, or just pride in the Deise.
Set out in 58 bite-sized chapters, this book explores a rich tapestry of sporting prowess, of teams and individuals, of mainstream sports to others that are unique, and span from the 1700s to the present day. From the tragic to the heroic, those who reached the pinnacle to those for who we can only think – what if.
But it’s the variety of sporting stories that impress and the lengths that Cian goes to explore the context of each account that are so absorbing. And not just the accounts, as fascinating as they are. It’s also his engaging writing style, his undoubted knowledge of the area’s history that adds context, and his clear social analysis that develop the stories and underline the challenges and obstacles often endured or thwarted.
If one aspect of the book disappoints it is perhaps the cover which might risk giving a sense that this is a book that celebrates male exploits. But Cian Manning makes immense strides to ensure this is not the case.
From the amazing exploits of three young women from the city who toured America in 1925 as part of the Irish hockey team, or Josie McNamara – Queen of sport, or the Waterford lady’s soccer league 1967-70 or the present-day achievements of international surfer of Tramore Grace Doyle.
Cian captures the exploits in their time and place, examining the characters involved, their exploits and achievements and the factors that may have contributed to success or failure.
Perhaps Cian’s greatest gift to his readers is the gentle manner of his interrogation, his deep and caring analysis, and his undoubted respect for his subjects. Cian is one of those wonderful warm human beings, who writes as he lives, with gentleness and attentiveness.
I can only heartily recommend this collection of stories to you whether you enjoy sport or not. Hopefully, Cian continues in this vein for more books to come.
I Love Me County is published by the History Press and is available in all good book shops at the price of €20.
